Required On-Call Experience
Students are required to take supervised after-hours (non-overnight) call in the Psychiatry Emergency Department (PED) during their 6-week clerkship. Students work with and are supervised by a psychiatry resident at all times during their call experience. During this experience, students participate in the medical clearance, consultation and evaluation of psychiatric patients admitted to the emergency department. Students learn how to assess, treat, and appropriately disposition psychiatric patients. Students gain knowledge of the emergency commitment process and become familiar with the different systems available for psychiatric treatment within South Carolina.
Students are evaluated by the Psychiatry Resident working with them during the call experience. Both direct verbal feedback as well as written feedback will be provided.
